Here are the situations that could lead to a tax refund in Israel:
You have filled in form 101 incorrectly
This paper is to be filled in every year, and given to your employer. You specify your personal details: surname, first name, marital status, number of children, address, do you have another place of work, special tax benefits (see below).
In this case, it is even likely that the bitouah leoumi also owes you money.
Change of workplace during the year
As tax is calculated on your gross salary on an annual basis (according to the progressive tax system), the tax will be deducted directly from your pay slip on a monthly basis, and re-evaluated each month if your salary is not fixed.
If you change jobs during the year, chances are you've paid too much tax to your 1er employer.
You've been made redundant
As tax is calculated on your gross salary on an annual basis (according to the progressive tax system), the tax will be deducted directly from your pay slip on a monthly basis, and re-evaluated each month if your salary is not fixed.
If you've been made redundant, chances are you've paid too much tax to your employer.
It is often possible to reclaim some of the tax deducted from your severance pay.
Increase your number of nekoudot zikouye (tax credits)
In Israel, every citizen is entitled to a certain number of "tax points", which can be used to reduce taxes.
In 2017, each point is equivalent to a 2,580 Nis discount.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of other "tax points":
- Israeli tax resident: 2.25 points
- The woman is entitled to an additional 0.5 points.
- Ole Hadash: Advantage during the 3.5 years of Aliyah.
- 3 points for the first 18 months.
- 2 points for the following 12 months.
- 1 point for the following 12 months.
- Children: varying between 0.5 and 2 points per child, depending on whether you are a man or a woman and on the child's age.
- Diploma.
- Disabled child or child with "educational problems": 2 points.
- Soldier who has completed military service or cheirout leoumi (national service): between 1 and 2 points (calculated according to length of service) for the 3 years following completion of military service.
Donations
In Israel, the "CERFA" (seif 46 - paragraph 46 of the tax code) allows you to reclaim 35% of the donations you have made during the tax year.
However, this reimbursement is subject to several conditions:
- This is a tax refund, so if you don't pay tax, you won't get a refund.
- The organization for which the donation is made must be recognized by the tax authorities as having seif 46 (paragraph 46 of the tax code).
So as you can see, the Israeli taxman owes billions of Shekalim to his citizens. Few Israelis know how much the Mas ahnassa owes them. This is more damaging than being able to reclaim excess taxes 6 years in the past.
The sums recovered are often in the tens of thousands of shekalim.
